The founders of Hotel de Milliano
Discover the story of the hotel and family de Milliano, who have always been closely intertwined. The protagonists in this fascinating story are Max de Milliano and Agnes de Milliano- Stubbe, the 2nd generation of the family business.
The 1940's: Buildup and Destruction
The story of Hotel de Milliano started in 1941 when Mr. and Mrs. de Milliano and their four sons came to Breskens. They rented the Hotel-Restaurant de Vuijst and the two oldest sons, Max and Frits, ran the business.

On September 11, 1944, Breskens was bombed by the allies, killing 184 civilians. During this bombardment, the Hotel – Restaurant de Vuijst was completely destroyed.

Shortly after the war, Max de Milliano wanted to build a new restaurant on the same location as soon as possible, for this he bought the land which was then still full of rubble.

However, there was a shortage of building materials in that period. Max was able to buy an old mussel shed in Yerseke, which was transported in one piece via the Scheldt. That’s how Max created a new Restaurant.
The 50's: the Restaurant grew
Max’s visionary character was also highly regarded. For example, he built a kitchen that was very equipped for that time with only top appliances from Berkel and Hobart brands.

In addition, he also created a vegetable and herb garden behind the Restaurant and thus pioneered a ‘Local Sourcing’ avant la lettre.
1959: Opening of de Milliano Express Buffet
Opening of de Milliano Express Buffet. Max and Agnes were given the opportunity to open a restaurant at the Nieuwe Veerhaven. The new restaurant was radical and innovative for the time and was inspired by American hospitality concepts and architecture.

Travelers who took the ferry by car often had to wait fifteen minutes to half an hour until the next boat.
1964: Opening Hotel de Milliano
1964: Opening of the Hotel de Milliano. The hotel was built by the renowned Zeeland architect Piet Götzen (1914 – 1977), who developed into an innovative modernist shortly after World War II.

The hotel was initially built with for longstay guests. Many Belgian and Dutch guests rented an apartment with sea view for several weeks or even months and stayed in the hotel for a full summer, for example.
Focus on a short term stay for the guest
1984: Marijke, the daughter of Max and Agnes, joins the company. She will slowly but surely take over the management of the hotel.

2003: Shortly after the opening of the Westerscheldetunnel, which makes a car connection possible between Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and Walcheren, the PSD car ferries were taken out of service. Immediately, a large part of the customers for the Snelbuffet also dropped out, as a result of which it was decided to close the Snelbuffet and adjacent Friterie and Ice Cream Parlor.
2021: New energy in the hotel
2008: Shortly after Max’s death, the restaurant at the Oude Haven was closed. From that moment on, hotel guests could dine in the hotel restaurant during the evening.

2021: After Agnes passed away, the children decided to let Aiyesha manage the hotel. Together with her top team, including Kumary, Jacques and Anna, they continue to run the hotel with the right attitude and passion.

Thus de Milliano – modernist hotel was born.
